The European Council has approved its 15th sanctions package against Russia, which had previously been agreed upon at the Permanent Representatives Committee (COREPER) level. This was confirmed in a press statement posted on the European Council’s official website.
“Russia continues its brutal assault against Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. This sanctions package is part of our response to weaken Russia’s military machine and those enabling this war, including Chinese companies. It demonstrates the unity of EU member states in our ongoing efforts. Our immediate priority is to put Ukraine in the strongest possible position to win,” said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas.
The Council specifically agreed to a significant package of 84 listings, consisting of 54 individuals and 30 entities responsible for actions that undermine or threaten Ukraine’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence.
Regarding individuals, the EU is sanctioning the military unit responsible for the attack on the Okhmadyt children’s hospital in Kyiv, senior managers in major energy sector companies, individuals responsible for the deportation of children, and two senior DPRK officials.
As for entities, the EU mainly targets Russian defense companies and maritime transport companies responsible for transporting crude oil and petroleum products by sea, generating significant revenue for the Russian government.
