The High Representative of the European Union, Kaja Kallas, has stated that the “collapse of the criminal regime” of Bashar al-Assad represents a historic moment for the Syrian people, who have endured tremendous suffering but also shown remarkable resilience in their pursuit of dignity, freedom, and justice. “It is of crucial importance to preserve Syria’s territorial integrity and respect its independence, as well as its state institutions, and to reject all forms of extremism,” Kallas emphasized.
In her statement, Kallas expressed solidarity with the victims of Assad’s regime and the ongoing war, as well as with all Syrians, both in Syria and in the diaspora. She noted that the Syrian people now have an opportunity to unite, stabilize, and rebuild their country, re-establish justice, and ensure accountability.
The EU stands with the Syrian people during this critical period and is in close contact with regional partners and key international stakeholders, Kallas added.
She stressed, “It is more important than ever that all parties engage in an inclusive dialogue, led and controlled by Syria, on all key issues, to ensure a peaceful and inclusive transition in the spirit of UN Security Council Resolution 2254 and in line with the will of the Syrian people.”
Kallas also affirmed the EU’s strong support for the efforts of the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen.
She urged all parties in Syria to avoid further violence, ensure the protection of civilians, and respect international law, including humanitarian law. Specifically, she called for the protection of all minorities, including Christians and other religious communities, to guarantee the safety of foreign nationals, to respect diplomatic missions in Damascus, and to protect Syria’s rich cultural heritage and religious monuments.
