Serbia finds itself in a “very difficult situation,” and the European Union continues to strongly support the country’s European path and the aspirations of its people, said European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos in an interview with Deutsche Welle, addressing the ongoing protests in Serbia.

Kos emphasized that despite holding EU candidate status for many years, Serbia has yet to implement the full range of necessary reforms.

“This is why we are helping them to implement those reforms,” she explained, as reported by Klan Kosova.

When asked about Kosovo as a condition for Serbia’s EU accession, Kos was clear:

“I always say that when a country chooses the path toward the EU, it comes with obligations and responsibilities. It’s a matter of choice. No one is forcing Serbia. But when you say, ‘Yes, we want to become a member of the EU’ – then it must be done. Many things must be done.”

Her remarks underscore the EU’s consistent position that normalization of relations between Serbia and Kosovo is a fundamental prerequisite for Serbia’s EU accession process.
