On Monday, Kaja Kallas, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, announced that she had instructed a senior European diplomat to visit Damascus and establish contact with Syria’s new leadership.
“I have tasked the EU’s top diplomat in Syria to go to Damascus and engage with the new government,” Kallas stated before the start of the EU Foreign Ministers’ meeting, which she will preside over for the first time.
The situation in Syria following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime will be one of the main topics at the meeting, according to Hina news agency. The EU ministers will discuss how to approach the new Syrian leadership, headed by the Hayʼat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group, which is listed as a terrorist organization by the United Nations.
Call for Peaceful Transition in Syria
Last week, Kallas, on behalf of all EU member states, called for a peaceful and inclusive transition of power in Syria, emphasizing the need to preserve the country’s territorial integrity, independence, and sovereignty. She also highlighted the importance of protecting civilians, particularly minorities, amid the ongoing crisis.
Croatian Foreign Minister Gordan Grlić Radman expressed cautious optimism about the new Syrian authorities’ early statements but emphasized the need for tangible actions, especially regarding the protection of civilians and religious minorities, such as Christians.
Discussion on Georgia and Support for Ukraine
The situation in Georgia will also be discussed at the meeting, with Kallas advocating for sanctions against Georgian officials responsible for violence against pro-European demonstrators. These protests have been ongoing for the third week, as citizens voice their dissatisfaction with election irregularities and the ruling pro-Russian party, Georgian Dream’s deviation from the European path.
However, Kallas’s proposal faces opposition from Hungary, which has announced its opposition to the sanctions. Slovakia may also join in opposing the move.
Additionally, EU ministers will discuss continued support for Ukraine amidst its ongoing conflict with Russia.
