The European Union (EU) is expected to issue a statement in its conclusions addressing the current situation in northern Kosovo, following the explosion at the Ibër-Lepenc canal in Zubin Potok last month.
Kosovo blames Serbia for the attack, a claim which is denied by official Belgrade.
The EU’s conclusions will condemn the attack on the Ibër-Lepenc canal, which the EU had previously labeled a terrorist act, much like the attack in Banjska last year. It will also reiterate its call for those responsible for these attacks to be brought to justice.
“The Council remains deeply concerned about the situation in the north of Kosovo. Kosovo and Serbia must take steady steps to de-escalate, refrain from unilateral and provocative actions that may lead to tensions and violence, and avoid divisive rhetoric,” reads a draft of the document.
The EU will also reiterate that the measures currently in place against Kosovo could be lifted if the appropriate steps are taken to ease tensions.
As reported by REL, there are significant differences among EU member states regarding measures against Kosovo. The majority of member states want these measures to be lifted immediately and in full, but some countries, like France and Italy, advocate for a gradual removal. These differences have contributed to the continued enforcement of the measures.
