The European Commission hopes that EU member states will make significant progress in strengthening their defense against Russian drones.

According to available information, Brussels’ armament plans call for EU leaders to approve a new initiative this year, primarily aimed at countering Russian drone threats.

Joint procurement of surveillance systems and defensive technologies could begin soon after, with the first components expected to be operational by late 2026 and the system fully functional by the end of 2027.

The roadmap, to be presented by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, and the European Commissioner for Defense, Andrius Kubilius, emphasizes that the recent and repeated airspace violations of EU member states have highlighted the urgent need for a flexible, responsive, and modern European drone defense capability.
