Peter Sorensen, the European Union’s Special Representative for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, has spoken to the media following separate meetings with President Vjosa Osmani and Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti. Sorensen confirmed that the main focus was the implementation of previously reached agreements.
However, he also warned of potential delays in the dialogue process due to the ongoing institutional deadlock in Kosovo.
“I just had meetings with Prime Minister Kurti and President Vjosa Osmani. I’m here as part of my mandate to discuss how to implement the agreements. The political situation here means things might take more time. This was a regular meeting, and I’m happy to be here,” Sorensen stated to the press.
President Osmani Pushes for EU Support and Institutional Functionality
Earlier, the Office of the President released a statement detailing Osmani’s discussions with Sorensen. She called for the removal of punitive measures imposed on Kosovo and emphasized the importance of functional democratic institutions.
The conversation also addressed the arbitrary arrests of Kosovo citizens by Serbian authorities.
“The president raised the issue of the arbitrary arrests of Kosovo citizens by Serbia, demanding greater engagement from the international community to stop these unlawful actions,” the statement reads.
President Osmani stressed the need for a fair and impartial dialogue that clearly defines objectives and contributes to regional peace, stability, and EU integration.
She also thanked Sorensen for his ongoing commitment to a principled and balanced dialogue.
Kosovo’s EU Path and International Recognition
President Osmani reiterated Kosovo’s dedication to democratic reforms and its European trajectory.
“These efforts should be rewarded with concrete steps from the European Union,” she emphasized, also noting the importance of Kosovo’s integration into international organizations, especially the Council of Europe.
Following the meeting with Osmani, Sorensen also met with Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti, though the Prime Minister’s Office has yet to issue an official statement regarding the discussion.
