The European Union has imposed sanctions on 15 Iranian officials over the bloody suppression of nationwide protests, including senior commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

The sanctions increase international pressure on the Islamic Republic, which is facing the threat of possible military action by U.S. President Donald Trump in response to the killing of peaceful demonstrators and concerns over potential mass executions, the Associated Press reports.

The U.S. military has redeployed the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and several guided-missile destroyers to the Middle East.

It remains unclear whether President Trump will decide to use force, after activists reported that at least 6,373 people have been killed during the crackdown.
