The European Union has stated that it will gradually lift measures against Kosovo, depending on the reduction of tensions in the northern region, following Kosovo’s actions against Serbian-supported parallel institutions.

The European Union is closely monitoring the latest developments in northern Kosovo, where Kosovo authorities have taken steps to close Serbian-backed institutions. A spokesperson from the European Commission emphasized that the status of these institutions, which are supported by Serbia, should be addressed through the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue.

The EU’s statement underlined that Kosovo authorities must avoid closing healthcare, education, or other Serbian-supported institutions, as these are part of the agreements in the ongoing dialogue facilitated by the EU.

“The European Union is following the latest actions against Serbia-backed structures in northern Kosovo, which are being taken ahead of general elections,” the spokesperson stated. “Kosovo authorities should not close any institutions that are part of the agreements in the dialogue process.”

The EU also reminded Kosovo to honor its commitments under the dialogue process, noting that restrictive measures would be lifted gradually as Kosovo takes steps to de-escalate tensions in the north.

“Progress in de-escalation and refraining from unilateral and provocative actions are essential to avoid violence and division,” the EU declaration further emphasized. “The normalization of relations is a key condition for both parties’ European paths, and without progress, both risk losing important opportunities.”

Earlier in 2023, the European Union imposed several restrictive measures on Kosovo due to rising tensions in the north, with plans for further actions if Kosovo’s approach does not change.
