The European Union is preparing a “Plan B” on how to maintain economic sanctions against Russia if the Trump administration abandons peace talks in Ukraine and seeks rapprochement with Moscow.

This was stated by the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, in an interview with the Financial Times on Wednesday.

“We are seeing signs that they are thinking about whether they should pull out of Ukraine and not try to reach an agreement with the Russians because it’s difficult,” she told FT.

“There is also a Plan B, but we need to work on Plan A; because otherwise, you focus on Plan B and that will happen,” she said, adding that talks were continuing with Washington and other international partners to ensure that the Western sanctions regime remains in place.
