The European Union remains divided over the issue of Gaza, stated EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, following an informal meeting of the bloc’s foreign ministers in Copenhagen.

Kallas emphasized that the division among member states negatively impacts the EU’s global credibility and expressed disappointment over the inability to reach a unified stance, according to Euronews.

Kallas: “It’s Very Difficult”

In an interview, Kallas said that the split among EU member states on Gaza has made it difficult to present a unified position. “If you ask me personally how it feels, since I am the face that is blamed for us not having a decision, then it’s difficult. It’s very difficult,” she stated.

No Agreement on Israel

The EU diplomat added that there is still no agreement among member states on a plan to suspend free trade with Israel under the EU-Israel Association Agreement. Countries such as Germany and Hungary have opposed this proposal, while Denmark has shown support for the suspension.

Sanctions on Russia and Cryptocurrencies

Regarding Russia, Kallas also noted that the EU is considering new sanctions, including restrictions on cryptocurrencies that facilitate evasion of sanctions against Russia. This will be part of a new sanctions package that may also include limits on oil and gas imports from Russia, as well as secondary sanctions targeting Russia’s trading partners.

Support for Palestine and Call for US Policy Change

At the Copenhagen meeting, the EU also approved a document calling on the United States to lift the travel ban for the Palestinian delegation to the UN General Assembly, emphasizing the importance of Palestinian participation in this international forum.
