The European Union has vowed to respond proportionally to any tariffs imposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump on European goods, said Valdis Dombrovskis, the EU Commissioner for Economy, on Wednesday.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Dombrovskis emphasized the EU’s readiness to protect its economic interests.

“If it becomes necessary to defend our economic interests, we will respond in a proportional manner,” Dombrovskis told CNBC.

Strategic Partnership with the U.S.

Dombrovskis highlighted the importance of maintaining a strong strategic alliance between the EU and the U.S., both geopolitically and economically.

“The U.S. and Europe are strategic allies, and it’s important that we work together. However, we are ready to defend our values, as well as our interests and rights, if necessary,” he stated.

Trump’s Tariff Threats

Since his inauguration earlier this week, Trump has reiterated his stance on imposing tariffs on European goods, accusing the EU of unfair trade practices. He described the EU as “very, very bad” for the U.S.

“They will be interested in tariffs. That’s the only way … you will get fairness,” Trump was quoted as saying to reporters.

EU’s Preparedness

The EU’s firm stance signals its commitment to defending its economic stability and sovereignty against unilateral measures. As tensions around potential tariffs escalate, the EU remains poised to counter any adverse actions while seeking avenues for constructive collaboration with the U.S.
