Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon has confirmed that EU member states will support the appointment of Danish diplomat Peter Sørensen as the new EU Special Representative for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue. Fajon emphasized that this dialogue will remain a high priority on the EU agenda.
Key Statements
“Today, we will support the appointment of a new EU Special Envoy for the dialogue between Belgrade and Prishtina, the highly respected Danish diplomat Peter Sørensen, who has previously led European delegations in Bosnia and Herzegovina and North Macedonia,” Fajon stated to reporters before the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting.
She reiterated that the EU remains committed to keeping the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue central to its foreign policy initiatives.
Sørensen’s Confirmation
Sørensen was nominated by EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas. His nomination received preliminary approval from EU ambassadors last week, and final confirmation is expected from EU foreign ministers. If confirmed, Sørensen will begin his mandate in early February, succeeding Miroslav Lajčak, whose term ends on January 31.
Sørensen’s Role and Experience
Sørensen’s diplomatic credentials include leading EU delegations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, and advisory roles in Kosovo through the UN Mission (UNMIK). His expertise in the Western Balkans positions him to facilitate the complex Kosovo-Serbia dialogue effectively.
EU’s Commitment to the Dialogue
The Kosovo-Serbia dialogue, mediated by the EU, began in 2011 to normalize relations between the two nations. Despite several agreements, implementation challenges persist. Sørensen’s appointment underscores the EU’s determination to revitalize the process and encourage both parties to honor their commitments.
As Fajon noted, the dialogue is not only vital for regional stability but also integral to Kosovo and Serbia’s path toward EU integration.
