Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen hosted EU leaders and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Aarhus to mark the beginning of Denmark’s presidency of the EU Council, placing Ukraine and EU enlargement firmly at the top of the agenda.

At the center of the discussions was support for Ukraine and the country’s path toward EU membership.

“Ukraine belongs in the European Union. It’s in Denmark’s and Europe’s interest,” said Frederiksen. “The Danish Presidency will do everything it can to help Ukraine on its path to full membership.”

While the Western Balkans were not directly mentioned in her speech, the presidency’s priorities confirmed that Denmark intends to push forward enlargement negotiations with the region as well.

This was reaffirmed by European Council President António Costa:
“We can count on the Danish Presidency to advance talks not only with Ukraine and Moldova but also with the six countries of the Western Balkans.”

Key meeting topics also included expanding military aid to Ukraine, cooperating with Ukraine’s defense industry, and imposing further sanctions on Russia.

Frederiksen emphasized:
“We must strengthen Ukraine—and weaken Russia. First, by increasing military support. Ukraine is essential to Europe’s security. Our contribution to Ukraine is also a defense of our own freedom. Second, by sanctions. We must increase the pressure on Russia.”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed full support for Denmark’s leadership:
“As the first achievement of your Presidency, you may succeed in passing the 18th sanctions package.”
