The European Union’s top diplomat, Kaja Kallas, warned on Monday that any attempt by Iran to close the Strait of Hormuz would be an “extremely dangerous” act that would severely harm global interests.
“Concerns about retaliation and escalation of this war are high, especially the closure of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran is something that would be extremely dangerous and not good for anyone,” Kallas stated ahead of the EU foreign ministers’ meeting.
Her comments come after Iranian state television, Press TV, reported that the Supreme National Security Council is considering a final decision to blockade the strait, a move already supported by the Iranian parliament.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most strategic routes for oil transport, with approximately 20% of the global supply of oil and natural gas passing through it.
