The European Commission has clarified that Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico did not represent the European Union during his recent visit to China, where he was the only EU leader present.
Asked at the Commission’s daily press briefing whether Fico’s trip could be interpreted as an EU-level engagement, the spokesperson gave a brief response:
“No.”
When pressed further about Fico’s remarks on Russian President Vladimir Putin and his stance on Ukraine, the spokesperson declined to elaborate, saying:
The Commission’s reaction highlights Brussels’ effort to draw a clear line between individual member states’ foreign policies and the EU’s official positions, particularly on sensitive issues concerning China, Russia, and Ukraine.
