In a letter dated July 18, European Council President Antonio Costa has confirmed to Shaip Kamberi the only ethnic Albanian MP in Serbia’s Parliament that the European Union is closely monitoring how Serbian authorities treat national minorities, particularly the Albanian community in the Presheva Valley.
Costa emphasized that “the rights of national minorities will remain a key component of Serbia’s obligations in the EU accession process.” He further stated that Serbia is expected to align its legal framework on minority rights with international and European standards.
In his public response, Kamberi described the letter as “another step toward the internationalization of the Albanian issue in the Valley.” He highlighted that the Council of Europe has been made fully aware of the controversial practice of address passivization used by Serbian institutions to suppress the political and civil presence of Albanians in southern Serbia.
Kamberi noted that this issue has also been raised in the EU’s enlargement reports, and he reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for the rights of the Albanian minority.
“Our efforts to advance the position of minorities will continue. The EU and regional integration remain our only political aspiration,” he stated.
