Belgrade – The European Democratic Party has launched a scathing critique of Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić in the wake of the recent local elections in Mionica, Negotin, and Sečnje, accusing him of consolidating power through violence, fear, and systematic voter manipulation.
In a statement posted on the party’s IX page last night, the European Democrats warned that Vučić is “afraid of national elections because, when he does not send thugs to beat students, young people, citizens, MPs, or journalists, as he did in Mionica, he knows he cannot win.”
The party painted a grim picture of Serbia’s political climate, claiming that the local elections were marred by fraud, voter intimidation, attacks on election observers, and organized gangs operating with police complicity. “These elections reflect the harsh reality in Serbia today. Democracy cannot survive without accountability, and Vučić’s regime threatens both the rule of law and the very essence of free elections,” the statement added.
Observers have long criticized Vučić’s governance for blurring the lines between the state and the ruling party, creating an environment where political violence and suppression of dissent have become normalized. According to the European Democratic Party, the latest elections underscore that without coercion and intimidation, Vučić cannot secure electoral victories on merit, highlighting the fragile state of Serbian democracy.
The party called for international scrutiny and urgent reforms, warning that unless mechanisms are introduced to ensure fair elections and protect civic freedoms, Serbia risks further entrenchment of authoritarian rule under Vučić.
