Members of the European Democratic Party (EDP) in the European Parliament have criticized Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić’s reaction to the recent visit of a European Parliament delegation to Serbia, describing it as “not a trivial incident” but a worrying signal for democracy in the country.

In an official statement on X (formerly Twitter), the party emphasized that the European Union does not “interfere” in domestic affairs. Instead, it monitors elections, listens to citizens, and demands transparency, which are standard democratic practices. The EDP added that those who respect democratic norms should not fear oversight.

A true European future requires rules, freedoms, and accountability—not propaganda or intimidation,” the statement read. It further stressed that the rule of law and fundamental rights are non-negotiable.

The controversy arose after top Serbian officials, including President Vučić and Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabić, stated they did not wish to meet the EP delegation, claiming they were not notified or consulted about the visit. Vučić commented, “I do not want to see them. Count on it—I am in Serbia but do not wish to meet with them,” citing his travel plans to Davos. Brnabić similarly noted she would be in Estonia during the delegation’s visit.

The European Democrats’ reaction underscores growing concern in the EU regarding Serbia’s commitment to democratic standards and transparency, especially in light of its ongoing EU accession process.
