European leaders recently met to discuss a potential peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia during an EU–African Union summit in Angola.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk emphasized that no agreement involving Ukraine should undermine the security of Poland or Europe, highlighting the need to safeguard regional stability, according to Reuters.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stressed that Europe must continue to support Ukraine’s interests, ensuring the country maintains a strong military and reliable security guarantees. He noted that such support is crucial for securing a stable future for Ukraine.

European Council President António Costa underlined that issues such as sanctions, EU enlargement, and asset freezes must involve the approval and participation of all EU member states.

Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that although work remains to be done on the peace agreement, there is now a solid foundation to move forward. She also emphasized that as a sovereign state, Ukraine has the right to determine its own armed forces, and “the choice of its fate is in its own hands.”
