The European Parliament (EP) in Strasbourg has adopted a resolution on Serbia, which, based on its 31 points, is considered the harshest ever directed at the regime in power. The resolution was passed with 457 votes in favor and 103 against.
Key Demands and Concerns
The resolution addresses the increasing polarization and repression in Serbia, a year after the collapse of the bus station canopy in Novi Sad. Among the key demands and concerns, the European Parliament called for:
- Full Clarification and Sanctions: Serbian authorities must completely clarify the circumstances of the Novi Sad bus shelter collapse, impose sanctions on those responsible, and provide full support to the students.
- Illegal Activities: The camp in “Pionirski Park” was labeled as illegal.
- Criminal Involvement in Protests: Concern was expressed over the involvement of individuals with criminal backgrounds in organizing counter-protests by the ruling party.
The resolution’s adoption signals heightened scrutiny from the EP regarding the state of democracy and rule of law under Vučić’s government in Serbia.
