The European Parliament has approved the report on Albania. In the meeting of the Foreign Affairs Committee, MEPs highlighted Albania’s broad political consensus and strong public support for European Union membership.
The report calls for an urgent deepening of reforms in the country, while political dialogue must be constructive and inclusive. Referring to the May 11 elections, the document notes they were held in a polarized environment, and that the ruling party used administrative resources. For this reason, MEPs urge Albanian political parties to commit to electoral reforms in line with OSCE/ODIHR recommendations.
A key issue emphasized in the report is justice reform, where political interference remains a major challenge to be tackled.
Further priorities include strengthening judicial independence, combating corruption and organized crime, and protecting fundamental rights, where media pluralism and transparency are essential for building public trust.
On the development side, MEPs approved a €922 million fund dedicated to the Western Balkans, which will support Albania’s Reform Agenda once the necessary conditions are met.
The report, prepared by Andreas Schieder, was adopted by the Foreign Affairs Committee with 57 votes in favor, 11 against, and 6 abstentions.
