The draft report of the European Parliament on Kosovo calls for the removal of the European Union’s measures imposed in June 2023.
“We urge the immediate removal of the EU measures against Kosovo, which are no longer justified and contradict Kosovo’s demonstrated commitment to European values and alignment with EU policies,” the draft states.
The draft also praises Kosovo’s commitment to EU integration. It emphasizes that Kosovo’s future lies in the EU, and efforts to remove Kosovo from the gray zone are in the interest of both Kosovo and the EU.
The report supports Kosovo’s application for EU membership and urges EU member states that have not yet recognized Kosovo to do so without further delay.
Additionally, it supports Kosovo’s request for membership in the Council of Europe and its plan to join NATO’s Partnership for Peace program.
Aivo Orav, head of the EU Office in Kosovo, spoke on the matter, stating that the removal of the measures against Kosovo requires the consensus of all 27 EU member states, and discussions are ongoing on this issue.
“It seems to me that it has often been declared at the EU level that the European Union is not complete until the Western Balkan countries become members,” Orav said.
“I hope this will happen soon and not be delayed, but Kosovo must also fulfill many conditions and complete certain tasks. To lift the measures, the consensus of all 27 EU member states is needed, and there are ongoing discussions on this matter,” Orav added.
