The European Union has postponed tariffs on the United States on metals imposed by President Donald Trump until mid-April of this year, allowing him to reconsider which American goods to target and offering an additional week for negotiations.
The European Commission had proposed to reinstate 2018 tariffs on 4.5 billion euros ($4.9 billion) worth of U.S. products on April 1, while on April 13, U.S. goods worth 18 billion euros would be hit.
Today, during a hearing in the European Parliament, European Commissioner for Trade Maroš Šefčovič said, “We are considering the possibility of combining the timing of the two sets of countermeasures from the EU so that we can discuss both lists with the member states simultaneously. This would also give us additional time for negotiations with our American partners.”
