The European Union has congratulated the Ashkali community in Kosovo on the occasion of their Community Day, recognizing their cultural and social contributions to the country’s multiethnic identity.

In an official message shared by the EU Office in Kosovo, the bloc highlighted the important role the Ashkali community plays in strengthening multiculturalism and cultural diversity across the country. The statement also emphasized the need for continued institutional efforts to address social challenges faced by members of the community.

“The EU in Kosovo recognizes the important contribution of the community to Kosovo’s multiethnicity and cultural diversity and calls on institutions to continue combating discrimination and poverty, which many Ashkali still face,” the statement noted.

The message comes as part of ongoing EU efforts to promote inclusion, equal rights, and social integration for minority communities in Kosovo, aligning with broader European values related to human rights and equality.

Observers note that despite progress in minority rights protection, economic hardship and social exclusion remain significant challenges for several communities, including the Ashkali, highlighting the need for sustained institutional reforms and targeted support programs.
