The European Union has confirmed awareness of Russian activities in Serbia, where Moldovan citizens are reportedly being trained to influence the parliamentary elections taking place this Sunday in Moldova.
According to Moldovan authorities, Russian operatives have organized training for Moldovan citizens on Serbian territory with the aim of inciting mass unrest ahead of the elections, which are considered decisive for Moldova’s orientation between Russia and the West.
“Yes, we are aware, and according to Moldovan authorities, these operations and trainings are happening in Serbia. Currently, 74 individuals have been detained and are cooperating with the police,” stated EU spokesperson Anitta Hipper.
Moldovan authorities conducted raids at over 200 locations this week to prevent a coordinated plan by the Russian Federation to influence the electoral process.
Reports indicate that Russia is attempting to interfere through financing pro-Russian parties, spreading propaganda and disinformation, and exploiting energy dependence as leverage, aiming to weaken the pro-European course of the current government and strengthen Russian influence in the country.
