European leaders have said that more work is needed to secure firm security guarantees for Ukraine, as pressure from Washington on Kyiv increases to reach a peace agreement with Russia, BBC reported, transmitted by Rks News.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met on Monday in London with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to discuss the latest version of a peace plan drafted during last week’s talks between Ukrainian and American officials.
After the meeting, France said efforts would be “intensified” to provide security guarantees for Kyiv.
On Monday evening, Zelensky was expected to travel to Brussels to meet NATO officials and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
Ahead of the talks he hosted at Downing Street, Starmer said that a peace agreement for Ukraine must include “robust security guarantees.”
Merz stated that he was “skeptical” about some details of the potential peace plan proposed by the Americans. “But we need to talk about this. That’s why we are here,” he added.
In Kyiv and across Europe, there is growing concern that the United States could scale back its support for Ukraine due to frustration with the slow progress of negotiations. “We cannot manage without the Americans, we cannot manage without Europe, and for this reason, we must make some important decisions,” Zelensky said in London.
Last week, Ukrainian officials spent three days with the U.S. negotiating team in Florida, pushing for changes to a U.S.-backed peace proposal widely viewed as favorable to Russia.
