Several explosions shook Damascus on Tuesday, July 7, while French President Emmanuel Macron was meeting Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa during what has been described as a historic visit to Syria.
Macron had arrived at the presidential palace for talks with al-Sharaa when explosions were reported near the Four Seasons Hotel, where the French president is believed to be staying.
In a statement, the French Presidency confirmed that Macron was safe and that his visit would continue as planned, Le Monde reported.
Syrian authorities did not immediately comment on the incident.
According to Le Monde, citing Syrian newspaper Al-Watan and Syria TV, two explosions were heard in the heart of the capital.
A Syrian security source told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that one explosive device had been placed inside a garbage container, while the second was planted in a vehicle near the Four Seasons Hotel.
