Following the 49th failed attempt to constitute the Kosovo Assembly, all eyes are now on an anticipated meeting between the leader of Vetëvendosje (VV), Albin Kurti, and the head of Nisma for Kosovo, Fatmir Limaj. The meeting, expected to take place this afternoon in Pristina, could be crucial for finding a resolution and paving the way for the formation of Kosovo’s institutions.

Nisma Reiterates Demand for Limaj as Assembly Speaker

Nisma MP Xhevahire Izmaku emphasized that her party maintains its position on the Assembly Speaker’s post and is prepared to reach an agreement with VV only if Fatmir Limaj is accepted as Speaker. She expressed hope for a positive outcome from the meeting.

“We expect the meeting to take place today, I expect a positive signal from this meeting which I believe will happen today. I expect a positive signal and political will from the VV leader. This is the political reality, Nisma has extended its hand of cooperation. We expect the VV leader to show willingness. To move away from this deadlock, this possibility exists,” Izmaku stated.

She underlined that Limaj as Assembly Speaker is the best option for the country and that this cooperation offers a chance to resolve the current stalemate. “Nisma offered this cooperation, this should have materialized into a political agreement. There is no other offer, we have offered unconditional cooperation. Conditions that the executive be held by the first party, while Limaj heads the Assembly. It’s not a condition, it’s an opportunity, the best offered to the country at this moment. Limaj would get the votes. It’s an opportunity to get out of this deadlock,” Izmaku asserted.

VV Ready for Agreement, But Firm on Positions

From VV, MP Artan Abrashi stressed that his party is ready for an agreement but affirmed that it will not compromise on its core positions. He stated that VV has held continuous meetings with representatives of other political parties and remains open for discussions.

“VV is continuously holding meetings with representatives of political parties and parliamentary groups. Not just today, but yesterday, the day before, and tomorrow. Certainly with Limaj, but also others who express willingness and readiness,” Abrashi said.

Opposition Skeptical of Breakthrough

Opposition party MPs are more skeptical about the possibility of an agreement emerging from the meeting. PDK MP Elmi Reçica voiced his doubts about a deal. “I hardly believe there will be an agreement, knowing Albin Kurti, I am skeptical. He has quite a problem giving up the Speaker’s post,” Reçica commented.

Bosniak community MP, Duda Balje, expressed her view that Vetëvendosje’s stance regarding the Assembly Speaker post will not change. “Personally, my opinion is that Albulena will not change. And I don’t believe it will go to an open vote,” Balje said.
