Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon stated on Tuesday that the enlargement of the European Union is a geopolitical necessity and an opportunity for the entire continent. She stressed that Western Balkan countries must not be sidelined in this process.

During an official visit to Slovakia, where she met with Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár, Fajon emphasized the need for a more efficient, credible, and dynamic enlargement process within the EU.

“Enlargement is a geopolitical necessity and an opportunity for all of us. I would like to see this process accelerated. Slovenia sees potential in introducing qualified majority voting at certain stages of the enlargement process. We must not leave the Western Balkans behind,” Fajon stated via the social platform X.

Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation

The two foreign ministers also discussed deepening economic cooperation, particularly in the automotive industry and through connectivity with the Port of Koper.

Fajon also participated in a diplomatic conference in Bratislava, where she presented to Slovak diplomats Slovenia’s United Nations strategy and the challenges the country faces as a small state navigating international diplomacy.
