The FBI has raided the Maryland home of John Bolton, who served as National Security Adviser in Donald Trump’s first administration before becoming one of the former president’s outspoken critics.
According to the Associated Press, the search was conducted as part of an investigation into the handling of classified documents.
Bolton was not detained and has not been charged with any crime, the report emphasized.
Political Context
The raid comes at a time when the Trump administration is reportedly intensifying scrutiny of other perceived opponents of the Republican leader.
Bolton, Trump’s third national security adviser, served for 17 months before clashing with the president over Iran, Afghanistan, and North Korea.
He also faced controversy over his 2020 memoir, “The Room Where It Happened”, which officials claimed disclosed classified information. However, in 2021 the Justice Department dropped its lawsuit and closed a separate investigation into the book.
