Just hours before the Constitutional Court is set to issue its decision on the ongoing institutional deadlock, the US Embassy has shared a statement from Chargé d’Affaires Anu Prattipati, delivered days earlier, stressing that the United States cannot rely on a country without basic institutions.

In her statement, Prattipati said that the Trump Administration seeks strong allies with whom it can advance its priorities, warning that the deadlock could affect American business investments—with companies potentially choosing to invest in other countries instead of Kosovo.

“Forming a government after elections is a basic democratic function, and this ongoing political blockade is resulting in lost opportunities for Kosovo. The Trump Administration seeks strong allies with whom we can advance our priorities; a country without basic institutions and with an uncertain path to forming them is a partner we cannot always fully rely on. American companies require stable governments and reliable partners when deciding where to invest, and Kosovo’s inability to form institutions may cause them to do business elsewhere,” the statement read.

Today at midnight, the temporary measure imposed by the Constitutional Court of Kosovo will expire. This measure had prohibited MPs of the ninth legislature from taking any action toward constituting the Assembly, after lawmakers failed to meet the 30-day deadline set by the Court’s June 26 ruling.

As the expiration approaches, the country awaits a new Constitutional Court judgment, which will be decisive in opening the way for the formation of the Assembly.

Caretaker Prime Minister and Vetëvendosje leader Albin Kurti has stated that his party will respect the Court’s new decision, regardless of its outcome.
