Finland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has summoned the Russian ambassador to Helsinki following a suspected airspace violation by two Russian military aircraft. The incident is believed to have occurred last week near the coastal town of Porvoo in southern Finland, reports Rks News.
In a statement to Reuters, the Finnish ministry said the ambassador was informed of Helsinki’s position, describing the incident as a serious and significant matter.
“The ambassador was told that Finland takes the suspected territorial violation seriously,” the statement read.
Finnish authorities have launched an investigation into the incident through the Border Guard. The Russian ambassador reportedly pledged to relay the message to Moscow.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the Baltic Sea region has been on high alert due to several incidents involving critical infrastructure, such as power cables, telecommunications lines, and gas pipelines.
In response, NATO has significantly increased its presence in the region with naval assets, aircraft, and drones.
