A Finnish politician has died in the Parliament building in Helsinki, prompting an immediate response from police and emergency services.
Reports indicate that the individual took their own life, and authorities do not consider the death suspicious, according to Telegrafi.
Aaro Toivonen, Director of Security for the Parliament building, told local media Iltalehti that police are actively managing the situation.
Parliament Speaker Jussi Halla-aho did not comment directly on the incident, referring instead to a police statement regarding the matter.
Police are investigating the case as a cause-of-death matter and have confirmed that there is no indication of criminal involvement.
Multiple police patrols and emergency service vehicles were present at the scene.
Toivonen told Yle: “The mission is ongoing with rescue authorities, police, and emergency services at the site. I cannot provide further details at this stage.” He added, “I cannot specify the emergency response from the command center. Parliament is a somewhat unique location, so considerations were taken given the unclear nature of the situation.”
Eyewitnesses reported hearing several ambulances leaving the scene with sirens active. Jussi Seppälä, who works near the Parliament, said he was on a phone call outside his office when he was startled by the emergency vehicles.
