A large fire broke out this Thursday at a major German research center in Darmstadt.

The fire started on Thursday morning and, according to police, has been brought under control. Firefighting efforts are expected to continue until the evening. A spokesperson added that firefighters are investigating to determine the cause of the blaze and whether any hazardous substances were released.

According to the newspaper Hessenschau, the fire erupted in the area where the institute’s particle accelerator is located. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported.

“It is unclear how the fire started,” a spokesperson said, as reported by Euronews.al.

The center operates a particle accelerator facility for heavy ions, which are ions of particularly heavy atoms such as gold or lead. Ions are atoms that have lost part of their electron shell.
