The National Authority for Veterinary and Plant Protection has confirmed the first case in Albania of Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) a highly contagious viral disease affecting sheep and goats.

The case was identified on a goat farm in the Postribë administrative unit, Shkodër County.

Samples collected by the Veterinary Service were analyzed at the Institute of Food Safety and Veterinary Medicine, which confirmed the presence of the virus.

Upon confirmation, authorities immediately activated the National Contingency Plan for PPR, implementing isolation, control, and field management measures to contain the outbreak.

Officials have called on all small livestock breeders to:

  • Follow preventive measures
  • Avoid moving animals
  • Immediately report symptoms such as fever, nasal discharge, eye inflammation, diarrhea, or sudden deaths.

A free green hotline (0800 3366) is available for reports.

Authorities emphasize that PPR does not transmit to humans and poses no risk to public health.

The situation will be closely monitored, and the public will be kept informed regularly.
