The first mass in five years was held today at Paris’ Notre Dame Cathedral, one day after its official reopening ceremony. U.S. President-elect Donald Trump and First Lady Jill Biden joined dozens of world leaders at the reopening ceremony on Saturday, marking the cathedral’s return after it narrowly escaped total destruction from a massive fire. The ceremonies, including two masses held today, provided a moment of glory for France amidst the country’s political instability.

World leaders and worshippers participated in today’s mass, the first since the fire, which was led by Paris Archbishop Laurent Ulrich.

“Wherever you follow us, here at the cathedral, on a screen around the world, or through any other means of communication, I greet you with strong emotions,” said Ulrich.

The mass followed the festive atmosphere of the reopening ceremonies held on Saturday evening.

Archbishop Ulrich opened the doors of Notre Dame on Saturday night with a ritual knock on the door using a special scepter.

President Donald Trump was among over 1,500 guests attending the evening ceremony, marking his first trip abroad after his victory in the U.S. presidential elections.

Pope Francis sent a message, sharing his joy over the restoration and reopening of the cathedral.

French President Emmanuel Macron thanked all those who had contributed to the rebuilding of Notre Dame, stating that great nations can accomplish what seems impossible.

Earlier on Saturday, Macron and Trump held private talks and later met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

First Lady Jill Biden was also present at the Notre Dame reopening ceremonies, which were accompanied by music.

Today, Notre Dame opened to the public.

“As a Catholic, this is very important for me. This is significant for the history of France and for my faith. It’s also important because it shows our capabilities,” said French businessman Gaspard De Franssu.

“I’m Hindu, but like many others from around the world, I came here to visit this religious monument,” said American tourist Palak Arora.

The 2019 fire that nearly destroyed Notre Dame shocked the world. Hundreds of millions of dollars and the work of countless artisans helped fulfill President Macron’s promise to rebuild the cathedral within five years.

The festive reopening ceremonies come at the end of a difficult year for France, which is facing high debt and deficit, labor dissatisfaction, and the fall of Macron’s conservative government.

For now, the country has a reason to celebrate. /VOA
