Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa has arrived in New York to attend the UN General Assembly, becoming the first Syrian head of state to participate at this level since 1967, according to Syria’s state news agency SANA.

Al-Sharaa is leading a high-level delegation that includes several ministers and senior Syrian officials. SANA described the visit as a significant diplomatic event for Damascus, marking Syria’s return to the UN stage at the head-of-state level after nearly six decades.

The 80th session of the UN General Assembly is scheduled to begin tomorrow and will continue through Saturday, concluding on Monday.

Al-Sharaa, a former member of Al-Qaeda and a key figure in Syria’s devastating civil war, has repositioned himself as a pragmatic leader committed to rebuilding the war-torn country and restoring Syria’s disrupted international relations.

The United States has expressed willingness to cooperate with Syria’s new leadership but emphasized that engagement will be judged by Syria’s actions.
