Five men have been arrested in Germany on suspicion of being involved in a plot to drive a vehicle into people at a Christmas market, BBC reported via Gazeta Express.

Three Moroccans, one Egyptian, and one Syrian were arrested on Friday for allegedly planning to target a market in the southern state of Bavaria. Authorities said they suspected an “Islamist motive.”

Prosecutors stated that the 56-year-old Egyptian is suspected of “calling for a vehicle attack… with the aim of killing or injuring as many people as possible.” The Moroccans are suspected of agreeing to carry out the attack.

Officials in Germany have remained on high alert following previous attacks on Christmas markets, including the one in Magdeburg last December, which killed six people.
