Heavy rainfall has caused severe flooding in the northeastern region of Catalonia, leaving numerous residents trapped in their vehicles. So far, there have been no reports of fatalities or injuries.

The highest red alert has been issued in the coastal province by Spain’s National Weather Agency (AEMET). The Catalonia Civil Protection Agency has urged residents in the Ebro Delta in Tarragona to remain indoors, as AEMET forecasts up to 180 mm of rain within 12 hours in the area.

Train services from Barcelona and Valencia have been suspended along the Mediterranean Corridor, mainly affecting coastal routes, until further notice. Other regions in southeastern Spain, including the Balearic Islands, have also experienced heavy rainfall and flooding in recent days.

The extreme weather is being caused by Storm Alice over the western Mediterranean.
