In the aftermath of Sunday’s U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has issued a strong call for de-escalation and renewed diplomacy in the Middle East.
“Iran’s nuclear program is a serious threat to international security, and Canada has been consistently clear: Iran must never be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon,” Carney wrote in a statement posted on X.
He acknowledged the U.S. strikes were “designed to mitigate this threat”, but emphasized that the regional situation remains highly volatile.
“Stability in the region is a priority,” he said.
Referencing previous G7 commitments, Carney added:
“As agreed by G7 leaders in Kananaskis, resolving the Iran crisis must lead to broader de-escalation across the Middle East — including a ceasefire in Gaza.”
He concluded with a firm appeal:
“Canada urges all parties to immediately return to the negotiating table and reach a diplomatic solution to end this crisis.”
