Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has appointed financier and former BlackRock executive Mark Wiseman as Canada’s new ambassador to the United States, at a pivotal moment for bilateral relations and ahead of important trade talks with the administration of President Donald Trump.
Wiseman will assume the post in mid-February, succeeding Kirsten Hillman, who has announced the end of her term in Washington. In an official statement, Carney emphasized that Wiseman brings “exceptional experience, extensive networks, and deep commitment” during what he described as a “critical period for the transformation of Canada–U.S. relations.”
The new ambassador, 55, is currently a senior adviser and chairman of Lazard Canada, as well as an adviser to the Boston Consulting Group. He is also a member of the prime minister’s council on Canada–U.S. relations and a co-founder of the “Century Initiative,” an organization that has advocated for higher immigration levels in Canada—a position that has drawn criticism from the conservative opposition.
Wiseman’s appointment comes amid tensions with Washington following tariffs imposed by Trump on Canadian metals, lumber, and the automotive industry, as well as the launch of a review of the free trade agreement. His primary task will be to defend Canada’s economic interests and rebuild dialogue with the United States.
