New York, June 2 – Former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock has been elected President of the United Nations General Assembly in an uncontested vote held on Monday, Rks News reports.
Baerbock was chosen by a simple majority and will assume the primarily ceremonial role of presiding over plenary sessions of the 193-member body, according to Euronews.
Although Russia called for a secret ballot, the election was considered a formality. Baerbock is set to be inaugurated on September 9, just days before the opening of the UN General Debate. Her term will last for one year.
