The former mayor of Rome, Gianni Alemanno, was arrested on the evening of December 31, 2024, for violating a court ruling.
He is currently held in Rebibbia prison after being sentenced to one year and ten months in prison as part of the “Mondo di Mezzo” investigation.
His sentence had been converted to community service; however, the judges found that Alemanno had not adhered to this ruling.
The former Minister of Agricultural and Forestry Policies, who founded the movement “Indipendenza,” was found guilty of illegal influence related to payments made by the municipal company Eur Spa to Salvatore Buzzi and Massimo Carminati, two notorious figures in the Roman criminal world.
The Rome Surveillance Court had approved a request for him to carry out social services at the “So.Spe.–Solidarity and Hope” center, which helps people in need to integrate into society.
However, Alemanno is accused of violating the conditions set for his release, including a ban on leaving his house before 7:00 AM and a curfew requiring him to stay inside after 9:00 PM, as well as a restriction on associating with individuals with criminal records.
