Amid questions surrounding the American military presence, a strong warning comes from former NATO Commander James Stavridis.
According to him, the end of NATO is a matter of time, and Europe must prepare for the withdrawal of the U.S.
While the United States assures that, for the moment, they have no plans to move troops out of the Balkans, former NATO Commander James Stavridis warns that the end of the Transatlantic Alliance is inevitable.
In an editorial for Bloomberg, he states that the skeptical and divisive rhetoric coming from both the U.S. and Europe during the early days of Donald Trump’s second term signals that it’s time to consider what the geopolitical world will look like if the U.S. withdraws.
While he believes that the U.S. withdrawal from NATO would be an epic mistake, Stavridis points to a series of influential individuals who are advocating for the U.S. departure, making this option a real possibility.
According to the former NATO commander, if the alliance dissolves or survives without the U.S., we are likely to see a European Treaty Organization based on NATO but excluding the U.S.
Canada may choose to remain… But this would be uncharted territory, as no country has ever fully withdrawn from NATO before. He believes that the end of NATO would not be beneficial for either side of the Atlantic.
