French police are questioning a man suspected of murder after four bodies were discovered in the Seine near Paris.

The first victim was spotted by a passerby near a bridge in Choisy-le-Roi, a southeastern suburb of the capital, on August 13. Later that day, police who searched the area found three additional bodies submerged nearby, according to BBC.

Prosecutors said that one of the victims had been strangled, while another had suffered violent injuries.

The suspect is being held in Paris. Authorities have not released details about him or the number of murders under investigation.

The first body had been in the water for a short period and was identified as a 40-year-old local man, prosecutors said.

The three others were found in “a very advanced state of decomposition,” they added.

Prosecutors emphasized that, so far, there is no evidence linking the victims. They may have entered the water at different locations upstream and been carried by the current to the base of the Choisy bridge.
