Kosovo’s constitutional deadline for electing a new president is approaching, but parliamentary parties have yet to reach a compromise, with just four days remaining before the October 6 deadline.

Although party leaders have publicly opposed holding another parliamentary election, there has so far been no agreement that would enable the election of a new president.

Vetëvendosje leader Albin Kurti has said he would begin communicating with opposition parties to find a solution. On September 30, Kurti called on the parliamentary parties to sit down together and reach an agreement, arguing that Kosovo should avoid another election and elect a president within the constitutional deadline.

Meanwhile, PDK chairman Bedri Hamza has said that his party’s immediate priority is legislation concerning the Kosovo Specialist Chambers. He has stated that PDK is prepared to discuss other political issues, including the election of the president, once that issue is addressed.

Acting President Albulena Haxhiu has also called on the political parties to reach a compromise and avoid a scenario that would lead to new elections.

The Constitutional Court ruled last week that the deadline for electing the president expires on October 6. According to the court’s reasoning, the 60-day period for electing the president began after the Assembly was constituted beyond the Constitution’s 30-day deadline. If the president is not elected within the prescribed period, the constitutional procedure leads to the dissolution of the Assembly and new parliamentary elections.
