French Minister for Europe, Benjamin Haddad, stated that the enlargement process, including the accession of Western Balkan states, Moldova, and Ukraine, is a geopolitical necessity for the European Union.

“Now we need to talk more about reuniting the European family. Stability in Europe is essential, so enlargement is necessary. Keep in mind that the enlargement process is long and difficult, as candidate countries must meet requirements related to the rule of law,” said Haddad, France’s minister for European affairs.

France Offers Expertise

“France wants to help Western Balkan countries on their path to integration. We have experts who will be sent to most of these countries specifically to provide support for judicial reform and economic matters. Currently, there is reflection within the EU on reforming the enlargement process. We are open to discussions on how we might creatively consider a new intermediate status,” he added.

Haddad also praised the European Political Community meeting held in Tirana last year.

“Sometimes it’s enough to take a walk in Montenegro, Albania, Moldova, or elsewhere to see what the European Union continues to represent for these countries seeking membership,” Haddad said.

In recent years, France had been skeptical of the enlargement process, but it has recently signaled political support for accelerating the European integration of Balkan states.
