France has reiterated its firm support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Denmark and Greenland, following renewed statements by U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting a possible U.S. takeover of Greenland, according to Reuters.

Speaking on Monday, French Foreign Ministry spokesman Pascal Confavreux stressed France’s solidarity with Denmark, stating that Greenland’s future must be decided solely by its people and Denmark.

“It is solidarity with Denmark. Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland and the people of Denmark. It is up to them to decide what they wish to do. Borders cannot be changed by force,” Confavreux told TF1 television.

Trump made the comments in an interview with The Atlantic, saying that the United States “needs Greenland, absolutely,” citing defense and strategic interests. His remarks came just one day after the U.S. capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, amid broader assertions that Washington would temporarily administer Venezuela.

The renewed rhetoric has prompted strong reactions from Copenhagen and Nuuk, with leaders from Denmark and Greenland urging Trump to stop issuing threats regarding the Arctic territory.

Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, holds significant geostrategic and security importance, particularly as global competition in the Arctic region intensifies.
