France has officially requested the organization of a NATO military exercise in Greenland and has expressed its readiness to contribute, the office of President Emmanuel Macron confirmed this morning.

The move comes as European allies seek to demonstrate their commitment to Arctic security to the United States, following repeated concerns raised by President Donald Trump, reports Sky News.

According to reports, surveillance units from the United Kingdom’s Air Force and Navy are negotiating participation in a “new defense line” alongside troops stationed in Greenland.

Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen pledged a “massive increase in European investments” in Greenland and Arctic security during her speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos yesterday.

Last week, military delegations from eight European countries flew to Greenland for a reconnaissance mission, which prompted a confrontation with Trump, who perceived the move as a potential threat.
